  1. Find a van exactly the same, thats undamaged. Take some photos and present them as your evidence, that it was not damaged when you returned it. They should have made you aware when you returned it that there was damage - not later
  2. Sue! Get a barrister and make them prove the claims. Call your credit card company and refuse the payment. Tell them the credit was not authorized, and they will not pay it.
  3. Apparently you're claiming the damage happened after you returned the van. If you did not damage the van (or it was not damaged while in your possession), the next quesion is, Why was it not inspected when you returned? If you returned it after they were closed, they can infer that you were deliberately avoiding an inspection on return. If the damage was found when they opened the next day, I suspect you will not have much luck convincing someone the damage was done after you left it. If you returned it while they were open and they failed to inspect the vehicle immediately, you have a valid argument. Their negligence caused the damage to be undiscovered until some time later. They would have to show that the van was protected and not moved before the inspection. If this is the case, you should make a claim with appropriate authorities against the rental company. Chances are they violated their own policy concerning inspection.
