How can you check the legitimacy of a credit repair company?

- I would search on there name on the internet too see if anyone has posted having any problems. You can also check with your state attorney general to see if there on the up and up. The BBB is ok but if they are members of the BBB and pay there dues they let some pretty lousy companies get away with bad practices way longer then they should. If you are trying to repair your credit have you gotten a copy of your credit report from one of the 3 reporting agencies? Alot of times they have programs to help you learn what effects your credit and give advice on clearing it up.
- If you have the time, it's best to study up on how to fix your own credit and go that route. It really quite simple to do it. Get a copy of your full credit report from all three companies (go to myfico.com to purchase, that's where I get mine) and go from there. Credit repair companies can actually do more harm than good in many cases.
- I own a credit repair business and yes you should check to make sure you are doing business with a reliable firm. A license should be a must as well as full compliance under the CROA. You should only pay a analysis/set up fee($75-100) prior to having restoration completed. Yes it is possible to repair inaccurate info from your credit on your own, as it is possible to defend yourself in a legal proceeding, but as they say:only a fool..... Your State gov't site should have a link to check licensing. Asking for references is a good idea as is searching the Internet for any news.Good luck in your endeavors
