Has anyone out there ever used credit repair services? What are the benefits?

- Actually, I worked for a debt consolidation company once & if that's what you're talking about then FORGET IT. It does work for SOME, but it usually just damages your credit more. Furthermore, there's a lot of fine print people fail to read. I would avoid it if at all possible.
- Everything they can do..you can do yourself. Go to creditboards.com..save 100's maybe 1000's..do it yourself by educating yourself
- Go to www.clarkhoward.com (a consumer advocate). Most of these companies are a scam. Use Consumer Credit Counseling (CCC) for free down to earth advice. They should be in your phone book. Good luck!
- i am using one now. The main benefit is having a professional do it for you. Sometimes when credit companies so another business name or law office name they tend to straighten up and fly right. Plus it just frees up your time to do other things. They basically do what you can do for yourself, but don't have the time or the knowledge of.
- It is true, you can do your own credit repair. I have yet to locate a credit repair service that ck's out. I have been doing credit repair for ten years and it all started after filing chapter seven. Currently I am writing a self-help cd on credit repair but there is a great book available at bookstores. Check out "Guaranteed Credit" by Arnold S. Goldstein. You will know all the tricks that credit repair companies use. There are many ways to attack credit issues, not just through the credit bureau dispute system. Keep in mind you must deal with actual legitimate collections and balances. You cannot erase what is legitimately owed. You can, however, negotiate settlements that will change account status from negative to positive. Also, getting incorrect information deleted from your reports is relatively easy. The credit bureaus must be able to verify your information within thirty days or delete it from your report.
