Bad Credit Agency

What are the best top 3 credit counseling agencies?

I have about $5500 in debt and I would like to consolidate them thru the credit counseling agencies. I am unable to get approved for a personal loan or a consolidation loan and so this is my last resort. I know that this will show up on my credit, but hey I figure that's life and I'm not going to let it get to me. So if you could help out in letting me know the best credit counseling agency to go to that would be great thanks!!!!

  1. Check here for Consumer Credit Counciling Service in your area: http://www.nfcc.org/. These are legit, non-profit credit counseling services. Don't use any credit counseling that isn't a member of NFCC. If you qualify for a debt management plan, it will show on your credit report but only while you are in the program. Upon completeion, the notation on your credit report will be removed.
  2. crystal is correct. Either that or start your own debt snowball. You start with the smallest amount owed and staying current with all others making the minimum payments and pay the smallest off first. Then add what you were paying them to the next smallest balance and work your way up the ladder. By doing this you feel accomplishment with each one that bites the dust. Good luck to you
  3. Be very careful with credit counseling agencies because a lot of them are scams. They negotiate with the credit card companies so that you can make one payment to the agency and then they're supposed to forward your money to the credit card company, but many times they don't forward your money or they're late - and you're right back where you started. They try to pass themselves off as not-for-profit but they are for profit - and guess where they make their money? Do you belong to a credit union by any chance? If not, is there a family member who belongs to one who could sign you up? Credit unions often have in-house credit counselors and their service is free - plus you know they're on your side. Try calling your Attorney General's office and ask for consumer services. Ask them to give you list of credit counseling agencies. If they won't do that, ask if they can give you a list of the ones they''ve had trouble with. There has to be some branch of government in your town that can steer you in the right direction. I can't emphasize enough to thoroughly research any credit counseling company you choose and be very careful when they ask you to sign a contract.
  4. The agency you choose to work with needs to be a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). http://www.nfcc.org You might also want to visit: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre26.shtm for additional information. The agency I went with is Money Management International/CCCS. They are non-profit but do charge a one-time flat fee to cover their expenses (account setup, correspondence to creditors, etc). They don't expect the fee to be paid in full up front. The fee is paid in 3 monthly installments which is added to your regular monthly payment.
