I had ID theft done to me, when I went to the local police dept., he wouldn't write up a report...why?
My wallet was stolen 2 years ago, never had credit, went to apply for something recently and was declined, got a copy of my credit report and was mortified. Now, I am with a credit repair company, who is getting results, but, said it would be faster to get results, if I had a police report. So, I went to the police dept., and the officier said that w/out proof of where it came from he couldn't do anything. My credit repair couldn't beleive the cop wouldn't do a report. What am I suppose to do now???? Any advice would be great...thanks in advance

- You should not have had it done to you.
- Go back to the police station, and if this person will not help you, and at the very least, file a report.. demand to speak to his supervisor.. or the sheriff. Best of luck with you credit.
- Wow that's awful. In your position I would get a copy of your credit report and take it back to the police station asking to speak to another officer. If you still get no joy, take the matter up with local MP. You can find their details by searching the web or dropping into your local town hall. Sounds like the policeman was just being a lazy git to me.
- go back and speak to the desk sgt. They have to take a report!!! He was just too lazy! Good luck! ~V.
- I would step it up and go to the State Police or the Sheriff's Dept..I am sure they will handle the case.
- There was no reason that your local police station could not file a police report. I think you should go to another station or ask to speak with a higher ranking officer.
- If the local police don't do a report go to the sheriff dept and get one from them. also, if you have home owners ins. it covers lost credit cards and I.D. theft also in some states.
- go back to the police station and ask for a supervisor. If you ask for a report they have to do one. They can just do a report for information but you need the case number to get anywhere on the ID theft issues you are (and will most likely have)
- sorry, it happened too long ago to file a report now. it sucks--i had my checkbook stolen a while ago, and the person wrote like, $500 in bad checks in my name. and you just get tons of letters from collection agencies. you should have reported it when it happened.
- Many times the underling cops will not take a person seriously, even if their problem can really create hardships. I would recommend talking to the Police Sergeant or your local District Attorney and see if they can file the report for you, or at least notify them that the police officer, who is supposed to protect and serve, is not fulfilling his duty to society. You always have to take it to the higher level if you are not satisfied with your primary results!
- Go back to Police Dept. and demand to speak to a Sergeant or Lieutenant - They will not only hear you out, but will take a complaint about the lazy Officer who wouldn't do a report. If they won't listen, contact the State Police and file a report...for future reference, call the Police whenever you have something stolen and at least get it documented that you were a victim of larceny. A case number from 2 years ago aould make it easier on the Police now.
- You have to write up the report with all relevant details given, then get the police to acknowledge that they have received your report by chopping 'received ' on your copy .
- I think he didn't write up a report is because ID theft is considered a federal crime. Contact the Federal Trade Commission and the 3 credit bureaus-Equifax,Experian, and Trans Union and ask them for help and explain your situation. Credit bureaus and the FTC are the ones that deal with ID theft and can help you get your credit back on track.
- Welcome to the Big old fat Club of Identity Theft. You can also File with the District Attorney's Office, The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Secret Service. If you know the city or town the Id Thief is in File with them too. It is Not just a Local Crime these days, it is also a Federal Crime to use someone else's social Security number. Kids identifying information are stolen at hospitals and Doctor's offices Before they come home from the Maternity wards. Why are infant's being Issued Social Security Cards anyway, since they cannot work until age 16? That is the Only Purpose for it and should be Protested by American Adults! Talk to a Supervisor and get that Police report. File a complaint also with Social Security Administration. Whatever you do Do Not change Your Social Security Number, it helps the Thief. Senator John Ensign of Nevada at hearings in Senate two years ago on Illegal Immigration had a constituent that had 500 Illegals stacked up on her Social security number. She could not get employment, disability or unemployment. She tried to get hired at the same company that had the Illegals working in Texas, After she Got her credit Report! CitiBank, Washington Mutual and Bank of America are the Absolute Worst! Make sure you put a Credit Freeze on all of Your Credit with Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Send it back Certified Mail and make a copy f everything. It will entitle you to a Reward of 10%...Good Luck
- It's likely that the cop has never been asked to write up a police report for I.D. theft and didn't know what he was supposed to do. You do not have to prove anything at this point to substantiate your claim. That is mainly why you certify at the end of the report that what you are saying is truthful. I.E. someone stole my phone out of my car while I had it parked outside for a few minutes.. I was still able to file a police report... but I had to certify that I was making a truthful report. Go back to the station, speak to a different officer. Make it clear that you were residing in THAT jurisdiction when the I.D. theft took place. If you were living somewhere else, then that jurisdiction's police department would have to take the report.
