Bad Credit Agency

How can I research a debt/credit restoration agency to see if they are legit?

My husband and I are interested in Gren Path Debt Solutions - we like the fact that they are local to us and can provide face to face financial counseling. They are also a non-profit (although they are a .com instead of a .org??) . However, how can I find out if they are really able to help us? What if they point us in the wrong direction? How can I research the company to be sure we are safe, and not digging ourselves deeper?

  1. The Federal Trade Comission website offers a lot of great resources on this issue. I made the mistake of trusting one of these debt consolidation agencies and it nearly ruined us. If they give you advice like "don't answer the phone" or "don't pay part of the bill" do not listen to them. Also talk to people at your bank, they can steer you in the right direction. Good luck
  2. Sorry I'm not sure, but I must warm you, 99.9% of those companies are bad, even not for profit, so please be careful =/ My best advice would be search the companies name on Google along with "complaint" "ripoff" "scam" and see what comes up.
  3. Go to my website and read it all! I do not have the room to post what you need to know here, but I cover a lot of the scams and how they operate. I had to repair my credit, what my site is about, after having my ID stolen and then declaring bankruptcy, so this is an area I know something about! I also have the link to the Government FTC website that can help you further in this. I have never heard of this company before and the only one I can say did what they promised was Lexington Law. I got my score up from 486 to 729 in a little over a year because my credit report was full of errors. Not an uncommon occurence! Most people's credit report contains errors 76% of the time, so don't underestimate the opportunity to challenge the negatives here as well! I go into this too. I hope my experience helps those who are going through something similar, so good luck1 It will all work out!
  4. Stay away from companies like Green Path. Credit counseling will kill your credit and they are really just debt collectors (they get paid by you and the companies that you are paying. These places are a total scam. You're better off with a credit repair company. Or repairing your credit yourself.
