Bad Credit Agency

Why did conservatives oppose the following programs ?

In spite of all of the right wing propaganda, the truth of America is that liberal programs have made this country great...and conservatives have opposed almost every worthy advancement liberals advocated for. Appreciate any thoughts...especially conservative thoughts on why conservatives opposed the following programs..... Social Security Right to Unionize 40 Hour Work Week Overtime pay Environmental Protection Agency OSHA almost all food safety laws Peace Corps Woman's Right to Vote Public Education Product labeling - truth in advertising Center for Disease Control Bank Deposit Insurance Earned Income Tax Credit Family and Medical Leave Act Public Broadcasting Consumer Product Safety Commission Americans With Disabilities Act Civil Rights Act GI Bill There are many more examples, but these examples should be enough of a framework Why did/do conservatives oppose these programs/laws ?

Public Comments

  1. Because those programs are not supported by Big Business and are FOR the people. It fits their party's normal way of thinking. Nothing new.
  2. Most of those things you listed REALLY SUCK. Endless, wasteful bureaucracy that could be handled better privately.
  3. Because liberals propose them....It works both ways, the repubs have their own lists just like it....but I suppose you know that.
  4. Give me a break. Liberals are the reason for all things good, and conservatives are the source of all things bad? I don't even consider myself a conservative but you must realize that this makes no sense, with any research one could find a long list of programs that conservatives want and liberals don't that turned out good. Stop the hate
  5. because a real conservative values the state to find and impliment there own solutions and giver soverenty to the states which also gives more working models for social programs, so all conservatives should want to not impliment Federal programs... And all these programs have made things better... you obviously are very young because it just keeps getting worse!!!
  6. Because most of them, including those not listed, require confiscatory taxation and are not equitable in there application. And frankly, are the direct path to socialism.
  7. SS- is an overstepping of government authority, never authorized in our Constitution and was only admittted to US law through the extortion scheme known as "court packing." Socialism is never good. Unionize- We don't oppose it, just don't like the idea that when you work somewhere that is unionized, you HAVE to join. But in the bigger idea, a business is a private institution, and should not have the government dictating how to practice business. 40- I did not know we did, it is the left that wants a French, well hopefully, former French policy of the 35 hour work week. Overtime- again, did not know we were against it. More likely, we are against the government dictating what they pay and when. EPA- govt bureaucracy is bad. Especially when it gets an agenda, and rams it down our throats. Who formed this agency, BTW? food safety- didn't know we opposed it, but again, it was a government mandate, without real constitutional outhority. Peace corps- didn't know we did, but we would rather support a stronger "real" military without starting up and extra branch. Womans right to vote- when did we begin to oppose this. Some "conservatives" opposed it when it started, but far more dems did, so are we discussing modern conservative views or those at the turn of the century. Public education- I prefer home schooling, or private. once again, it is a govt program when it can be done so much better privately, better if even public funds for private schools. Public schools are to beholden to the leftist agenda of the NEA. Products- Are we discussing modern political sensibilities, or those at the turn of the century? I don't, and know no conservatives who don't want truth in advertising, we particularly like it and would support it for example, at the head of a news cast, detailing the political agenda of the info contained. Public broadcasting- It is too liberal. If you don't think so, watch Bill Moyers, and if you still don;'t think hes liberal, then you must be too far gone. I don't want my tax dollars going towards a program that is discussing the danger of a Republican defeat in '04 because they will do a coup, as the election night commentary was. Civil rights- are you serious? Go research about what party supported this legislation and what party filibustered it, in fact one who filibustered it is still in the Senate, guess what party he is in?
  8. I can't address each program individually, but I can give you a few broad reasons why conservatives have opposed programs like these. 1. They're unConstitutional or contrary to the concept of Federalism. Almost all of the programs you list are Federal programs, yet the Constitution doesn't authorize the Federal government to be involved in all but a few of those areas. Conservatives may want similar government programs when they are done at the state or local level, but are against them at the Federal level. 2. They're impractical or have unintended consequences. For many of these programs, conservatives believe that the benefits to be gained are far outweighed by the associated fraud, waste, and abuse of power that they permit. It's kind of like how liberals view the Iraq War....they like that Saddam is gone, but question whether it was worth the lives of over 3,000 U.S. servicemembers (and untold Iraqis). 3. The programs can be better handled in the private sector. Often conservatives believe that the goals of particular Federal programs can be met more efficiently by the free market. For example, there are several private, reputable firms that certify the safety of consumer products. Why should the government get involved? 4. They believe the programs restrict individual liberty. A particular program may seem nice, but if it restricts the liberty of individuals it may be opposed by conservatives. For example, most liberals are appalled at the idea of the government meddling in the private, consensual decisions of adults when it comes to drugs or sex. For conservatives, they have that same revulsion when it comes to the government meddling in the private, consensual decisions that relate to business transactions.
  9. I'll just address four of these. OSHA and EPA were started by conservative republican administrations. Enough said. Public Broadcasting is now considered a liberal mouthpiece so don't count it as a positive success. Public education was started when there was nothing but conservatives. It is the liberals that decided to teach everything but the three R's. Conservatives don't want to support BAD schools and look who champions "No Child Left Behind", George Bush himself. Many of the others, even some liberals would label as failures.
  10. Because they are not Team workers for America, but their "Party discipline" if it serves them. Society,Social,Nation is not their individualist/egotist way of thinking,if it was up to them they probably would like a more Chaotic state of Culture where all is Up for grabs, but they benefit in some part from the Safety of Public Order. Being from an Aristocratic family,I can tell you they seem to follow the same rationale and feed themselves on the Public Wealth(formerly known as Royal)to have their their Republic as Caesar,Octavius or Marius did like it,to be beyond patrician privilege and take as much as you can. They maybe translate the higher Values put to make a Democracy for the common good of the Folk,as a simplified Road made easy for all hands toward the same Feudal system continued before.
  11. Wow, could you be more wrong on so many of these? Quick example: The EPA was established by Richard Nixon. OSHA was signed into law by Richard Nixon The Earned Income Tax Credit came in 1975. Gerald Ford was President. The Consumer Product Safety Commission came in 1972. Richard Nixon again. The Americans with Disabilities Act was sign into law in 1990 by George HW Bush. The Civil Rights Act was being filibustered by Democrats. It was only with Republican help that the filibuster ended and the legislation was sent to the president. Do a little research.
  12. The Republicans controlled the Government for the last 6 years and none of the programs that you have listed were eliminated. Seems to me if they are as bad as you say they are then some if not all of these programs would be history now.
  13. Well, since you provided no facts to back your post up, then I will provide the facts. Social Security - 40 Democrats voted against the SS Act, only 25 Republicans. . Unions - The first pro union law ever passed was the Norris_LaGuardia Act . Norris was a republican. 215 republicans voted for it,. only 93 democrats.. . Overtime - 56 Democrats and 41 Republicans voted against the Fair labor Standards Act of 1938. . EPA - was created by Republican President Richard Nixon in 1970. . OSHA - was created by Republican president Richard Nixon. . Womens Right to Vote.- Was passed by a Republican Congress over the objections of the Democrats. In the Senate, 36 republicans voted for, 8 against 20 democrats voted for, 18 against. In the house- 215 republicans voted for the law, 72 democrats voted against it. . I could continue going down the line. But whats the point. Now maybe readers of your question, will do some research and not believe the drivel you posted. . And hopefully, you will do some research yourself, And in the futue, stop posting such baseless accusations. .
  14. why??? because they are filled with marxist/leninist leftist rubbish...that's why! if you removed that aspect from each of the programs listed, you just might have something there...
  15. I'm not going to try to tackle all of the programs you have listed; I would be here all night. The basic problem that conservatives have with these programs is that they are unconstitutional. Let's take public education as an example. First of all, I have never heard of a conservative who opposed public education at the state level, and many do support it on a Federal Level (e.g., George H. W. Bush, "I want to be the education President" or George W. Bush pushing through the "No Child Left Behind" legislation). There is no provision in the Constitution for the Federal Government to be involved in public education. Conservatives don't really dispute whether it is a good or a bad idea; it is simply illegal for the Federal Government to exceed its constitutional limits. Like many of the free speech arguments: if we allow this, where will we ever draw the line? If the Feds do want to make education part of the Federal scheme, they have the means in place to make it legal. Propose and pass a Constitutional Amendment. The same goes for many of the the examples you listed. As far as some other things you mentioned: The American With Disabilites Act was signed by President George H. W. Bush in the White House Rose Garden in 1990. I rememger it so vividly because I noticed that he was escorted back into the White House by bodyguards, none of whom showed any signs of having a disability. The Civil Rights Act would not have been passed had it not been for the Republicans in Congress. Democrats such as Al Gore's father voted against it. Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme which is illegal anywhere else except Washington. It has the potential to bankrupt the U.S.A. I have never heard a conservative speak out against the right to unionize. It is true that conservatives are critical of unions, chiefly because of their abuse of pension funds, ties to the mafia and strong-arming non-union workers. Unions typically support Democrats, so it is natural for conservatives to consider them to be part of the opposition; however, conservatives do not dispute that they have a right to bargain collectively. ...which brings us to overtime pay and the 40 hour work week. Individuals and businesses should have the freedom to contract with one another. If the business owner cannot run his own business without the government's approval, then he is a slave. Much like the more intelligent pro-choice arguments (either you own your body of you don't - if you don't own your own body, then you are a slave). I wish we were sitting in a coffee shop, we could have fun discussing this topic.
