  1. Go to www.daveramsey.com and listen to his radio show. He's got TONS of good advice. dont' bother calling the credit card companies, they dont' CARE, they're just going to abuse you and yell at you, and you'll get all angry. DON'T do the consumer credit counseling. The lawyer is right - they "help you" by charging you thousands of dollars to not pay the bills, trashing your credit. You can not pay your bills yourself, WITHOUT paying them!! Cut up the credit cards. Listen to Dave. His method REALLY WORKS.
  2. Have you considered going to a bank for a consolidation loan to pay off and CLOSE all the credit cards and hopefully give you a lower monthly payment? If your credit rating has suffered due to late payments, this may be difficult unless you have someone to co-sign for you ( Parent, sibling) Credit counselling agencies are not all a scam, at least not here in Canada. Your Bank may be able to steer you to a reputable agency if they (the bank) are unable to assist. Good luck
  3. First, call your State Bar association -- the Law Office should know that filing bankruptcy requires that you use a Credit Counseling Agency. Second, call a NON-Profit Credit Counseling Agency. If you should eventually need to file bankruptcy, you have to go through a CCA first. Each CCA is a little different, so contact several and see which ones will work best to fill your needs. Keep in mind, some will give you a "loan" which is lower interest, and some will work out details with your creditors to reduce interest rates as long as you pay -- some will take money directly out of your account. Be sure to check out any CCA's on the Better Business Bureau website before you sign any legally binding documents.
  4. yea, i agree. not all credit counseling agencies are fraud....their are some good ones out there.
